Hizen Nao Washi

Naowashi, a paper originally from a village formerly known as Nao. This paper has more than 300 years of history, it is made from mulberry branches whose long fibers assure it’s robustness and durability that make it comparable to leather. The Naowashi manufacture is now entirely carried out by a single family, TANIGUCHI Yujiro (sixth generation of Nao paper mills).

The mulberry pulp has been dyed with natural indigo in collaboration with ASAI Naoyuki, artisan dyer of Kyoto. The scenography intends to sieve the light from the Grand Palais ceiling, to create a bubble of softness and to elicit submarine immersion. «Phosphorescences» molded paper lamps evoke the aquatic life and the effervescence of the waves. The «Empreinte» paper pattern was created using the side of the craftsman’s hand.
